The Chancel and Sanctuary
The Chancel is the part of the church east of the Chancel Arch, which is above the Chancel Step between the lectern and pulpit. The chancel includes the choir stalls and sanctuary. For historic reasons, the maintenance of the chancel is formally the responsibility of the Commissioners of the Church of England.
The Sanctuary is the holiest part of the church. On the altar bread and wine are made holy to be shared by the congregation in Holy Communion.
The altar is wooden table with a marble front depicting Jesus Christ as the lamb carrying his cross. The front of the altar is covered with a cloth, known as the frontal.
In the sanctuary is a simple example of a stone sedilia. Notice the lovely carvings on it.
